Oh,
how I missed the sun! Today was the first warm day since I’ve been here.
Glorious! Today I toured the Royal Palace. It was breathtaking, I got dizzy
trying to take in the enormity of intricate details in some of these rooms. I
loved visiting, but I can’t believe royals would enjoy living in a place where
everyday you are surrounded by portrayals of lions preying on deer, bloody
battles, faces sticking out of vases, and an amplitude of naked people. It
really is amazing. I got distracted by other pretty buildings in my vicinity,
and being in a shiny object-chasing kind of mood, I got lost again. Wore myself
out running through the streets of Madrid in the sun, and ended up arriving
back at the flat just two minutes before Dana brought Hugo from school. Of
course he wore me out even more. However, he didn’t hit me even once today! He
only yelled at me one time, but complied with the bath (Elena told me I could
bribe him with TV time). He did manage to soak the front of my shirt with a
water gun, but this was serious improvement.
Talking
to random people about what I am doing here, when I tell them that I am here
for two months, they always say, “that’s it?” Two months seems like a long time
to me, but it’s good to remember that I really don’t have that much time here.
This family has to deal with the absence of their father for six months. It
definitely puts it into perspective. Days like today when I run out of time to
see everything I want to makes me grateful for the 51 more days that I do have
here. Time is already starting to
accelerate.
